Using the Military as a Police Force

The background is an military coat of arms: two crossed swords in front of a wreath. When Military is Used to Police Civilians Police are trained to enforce domestic laws, treating residents with respect. Military, on the other hand, are trained to fight foreign enemies, using overwhelming force and aggression to win battles—employing tactics that led to excesses when the military were assigned to civilian law enforcement. That is why US law prohibits the military from performing law enforcement duties on US soil except during times of insurrection or invasion. Donald Trump doesn’t care about the law; he wants to deploy troops to US cities, and he wants a rapid deployment force. It’s not really about fighting crime. He wants a military presence that will act on his orders. If he has his way, we may come to see the military as an occupying force, like we see in military dictatorships. That may or may not happen, but that is the road Trump is on. If “Thank you for your service,” becomes, “Oh no, they’re here,” it will be a foul day for our nation.
